Anxiety Therapy

Why Does Anxiety Feel Like It’s Controlling My Life?

Do you find yourself constantly spiralling, locked in a cycle of worry and overthinking? Maybe it's about school or work, maybe it's about social interactions and what others think of you... or maybe it's hard to even pinpoint what brings on these feelings of panic. And the part you want help with the most? Feeling like you can finally live without constantly being pulled into worry or tension.

If that sounds like you, therapy can help you to shift how you handle thoughts and feelings, and free up some much needed space in your nervous system.

There's a Pattern Here

Here’s the thing: anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness or failure. It often develops as a response to stress, uncertainty, or environments that feel unpredictable. Basically, it’s your nervous system trying to protect you (even if it sometimes overshoots).

What that means is, your reactions are not “broken”; they’re patterns your mind and body learned to keep you safe.

The good news is that with guidance and practice, these patterns can shift. Therapy gives you tools to regulate your nervous system, respond differently to stress, and regain a sense of control over your thoughts and reactions.

Therapy can help you get back to the things you love

Anxiety doesn’t have to rule your life. My approach combines understanding the why behind your worry with practical strategies that make a real difference day to day.

In sessions, we’ll explore the sources of your anxiety (both past and present). Many clients find that anxiety is fueled by underlying fears, perfectionism, or patterns learned over time. We gently identify the parts of you that feel responsible for staying “safe” and understand what they need in order to calm down.

From there, we focus on strategies that actually work: grounding exercises, nervous-system regulation techniques, cognitive reframing, and gradual exposure to anxiety-provoking situations. We also practice how to respond to anxious thoughts with curiosity instead of panic, so they stop hijacking your day.

Sessions are collaborative and personalized. You’re not learning cookie-cutter tools, you’re learning what works for you, and practicing in a way that feels achievable. Over time, this approach reduces the intensity and frequency of anxious episodes and increases your confidence that you can handle uncertainty.

Why Work With Me

Megan Gauthier, MSW RSW

As a Guelph-based therapist, I specialize in helping people reduce anxiety through approaches that combine emotional understanding with practical tools. I integrate techniques from evidence-based therapies like IFS, EFT, and nervous-system regulation work, which together help you address both the thoughts and the body sensations that keep anxiety alive.

Clients often tell me that this is the first time therapy actually feels helpful, not just overwhelming or clinical. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, more capable, and more in control of your life, without judgment or pressure.

I still have questions about anxiety treatment...

A good rule of thumb: if anxiety is starting to interfere with your life (making it hard to focus at work, sleep, enjoy time with friends or family, or make decisions) then it’s worth getting support. You don’t have to wait until it’s “bad enough” to be a full-blown disorder. Therapy isn’t just for crises, it’s for learning tools and building skills so anxiety doesn’t run your life. Asking for help early can make relief come faster and last longer.

Absolutely not! You don't need an official diagnosis to seek therapy for anxiety.

Medication can be a helpful addition to therapy for some individuals with anxiety disorders, particularly in cases of severe symptoms or when therapy alone is not sufficient. However, medication is not always necessary, and many people find relief through therapy alone. Keep in mind that your therapist will not be able to diagnose an anxiety disorder, or prescribe medication. It's always a good idea to check in with a doctor or psychiatrist if you have questions about medication.
